Walter G. Frederick 1931-2026

CORTLAND -- With great sadness, Walter G. Frederick, 94, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2026, in the arms of his wife, exactly the way he would have wanted it.

Walter was the son of the late John and Katherine Frederick.

A proud graduate of Warren G. Harding High School, after graduating he went on to attend Youngstown State University after having enlisted in the United States Air Force.

A man of deep faith, Walter was a lifelong member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Always being a hard worker all his life, he started his first paper route at the age of 12 and just kept working.

Walter was an avid reader and smart as a whip. There wasn't anything that he couldn't fix or figure out!

Walter lived boldly, loved deeply and worked tirelessly.

He dedicated himself to his work, holding a position at Copperweld Steel as a supervisor for many years, leaving a lasting impression. He spent the rest of his career with General Motors before retiring.

He met the first love of his life, Pauline Tymchuk, married and had two children, Keith (Ellan) Frederick and Karen (Andy) Steib; and grandchildren, Alex, Hunter and Taylor.

Walter is leaving us with a strong work ethic, courage and love.

He met and married the second love of his life.

At the age of 60, Walter got his first horse, Yankee. He learned to ride and saddle like the best of us. He became quite an accomplished horseman, developing a passion for horses. His devotion to horses remained a cornerstone of his life, offering him both solitude and a source of physical and mental well-being. Walter had a deep appreciation for horses and believed decisively in treating them with patience, empathy and a commitment to their true betterment.

Walter will be deeply missed by his wife, who tirelessly nursed, loved and took care of him; dying in her arms was exactly what he would have wanted.

"Walter, I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I hear your voice. I had so much more to say. I love you."

Walter is survived by his wife, Shirley Ann; children, Keith (Ellan) Frederick and Karen (Andy) Steib; grandchildren, Alex, Hunter and Taylor; stepchildren, Danny (Lisa), Lana, Frankie, Andy and Jarrod; step-grandchildren, David (Lizzie), Alli (Gordon), Matt, Tyler, Breanna, Mikayla and Brayden; best friend, Kevin; dear Bill (forever grateful); and, of course, the love of his life, his little white dog, Sasha, who never left his side.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Pauline; and his brothers and sisters, Russell, Mike, John, Leo, Estelle, Mary, Olga and Ann.

Family and friends may pay their respects to Walter 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 2026, at the Peter Rossi and Son Memorial Chapel in Warren.

A prayer service will begin 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish-St. James Church, 2532 Burton St. SE, Warren, OH 44484.
