Raymond G. Gorby 1939-2025
SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — Raymond G. Gorby, 86, formerly of Niles, passed away Saturday, Dec. 27, 2025, after a short illness, with his loving family by his side.
Ray was born Oct. 24, 1939, in Warren, a son of William Lloyd Gorby and Mary Rose Gorby.
Ray graduated from Warren G. Harding High School in 1957, where he excelled in football, baseball and track. After high school, Ray joined the United States Air Force. Upon completing basic training in 1958 at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, he was stationed in Alaska and at Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah, Georgia, serving as military police. During his service, Ray earned a black belt in judo.
After his honorable discharge, Ray joined the Niles Police Department on May 1, 1966. He was promoted to sergeant and later retired as a lieutenant in 2001.
During retirement, Ray enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ronald, Wayne and Bill; and his son, Ray.
He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, the former Laura Ekonomon, whom he married Oct. 4, 1980; his sister, Suellen Lambert of Dayton, Texas; his children, Kim (Barry) Bradford of Champion, Lori Cryer of Niles, Mark of Tionesta, Pa., and Michael of South Carolina; his brother-in-law, Adam Ekonomon; his daughter-in-law, Paula Gorby; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Per Ray’s wishes, there will be no services.
A family celebration of life will take place at a later date.
