WARREN -- Dr. Leonard A. "Tony" Whitney, 86, passed away Thursday morning, Feb. 5, 2026, at his home with family, after an incredible fight against liver cancer.
Dr. Whitney was born Sept. 5, 1939, in Youngstown, a son of Leonard Sr. and Hazel Martin Whitney.
Tony was a 1957 graduate of Vienna High School and then furthered his education at Youngstown State University and joined the Naval ROTC. He then attended Springfield College in Massachusetts and Ohio State University, where he earned his doctorate degree. He dedicated his life to faith, family, service, leadership and education.
As a commander in the U.S. Navy, he embodied honor, discipline and commitment throughout every chapter of his life.
He married the former Susan J. Petrick on Dec. 19, 1974. Together they shared 51 years of marriage and many happy memories. She survives him.
As a native of Youngstown and following his military service, Dr. Whitney devoted 27 years as a full professor at Youngstown State University in the Health and Physical Education Department. In addition to teaching, he was also the head of the Human Performance Lab within the Health and Physical Education Dept. During his years at YSU, Dr. Whitney also became the director of ProCare, the cardiac rehab program for the YMCA and Heart Association in Youngstown.
His faith allowed God to guide him through his journey of life with his wife, Susan. Together, with faith, he found peace, strength and comfort through his courageous fight, which serves as a powerful example to all who knew him.
Besides his wife, Tony is survived by two children, Christopher Shawn (Kelli Tomko) Whitney of Youngstown and Lori Johnson of Tampa, Florida; his brother, Michael (Jacquie) Whitney of Dahlonega, Georgia; his sister, Susan (Kip) King of Newark, Delaware; two nephews, Eric (Lisa) and Kevin (Vivian); four beautiful grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, along with numerous wonderful extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, at Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel, 5797 Mahoning Ave.
