CORTLAND -- Elizabeth "Betty" Linville went to be with her Lord and with her husband on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026.
She was born on May 8, 1928, in Cortland. She was the daughter of Rush W. Chapin and Luella Biggin Chapin King. She was raised by her grandparents, Ernest and Myrta Fowler Biggin.
She graduated from Cortland High School in 1946. On May 24, 1947, she married her sweetheart from kindergarten, Richard "Dick" Linville. They were married for 58 years until his death in 2005.
She is survived by two sons, Barry (Karen) Linville of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Dennis (Judy) Linville of Cortland; seven grandchildren, Kristin Ludwig of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Dr. Jason (Jessica) Linville of Chelsea, Alabama, Erin Linville of Savannah, Georgia, Brandon Linville of Columbus, Erica Payne of Tallahassee, Florida, Mark Vinson, and Bryan (Andrea) Vinson of Crawford, Florida; nine great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter, Janelle; her parents and stepfather, Raymond King; her grandparents; her sister, Shirley Nelson; her nephew, Lee Nelson; and two half-brothers, David and Harry Chapin.
She was a member of Howland United Methodist Church. While a member of Cortland Christian Church, she served as an elder, treasury secretary, an officer of the CWF, and on several other committees. She worked for the city of Cortland and Ohio Lamp. She and her husband owned Linville's Clothing for 20 years and after retiring, she was a realtor for M.L. Palich and a bookkeeper for Four Star Travel.
Betty loved to read, play cards, work crossword puzzles and be surrounded by family. She was a member of CCL, Literary Club, Lake Vista Book Club and Chapter EE of PEO. Having been born in Cortland and lived her entire life there, she was very proud of her city and of Lake Vista, where she and her husband resided. She and her husband loved to travel and especially enjoyed trips to Florida and going on cruises. She and Dick moved to Lake Vista in 2002 and enjoyed living there.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Warren Mission and the Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County.
The family is in the care of Lane Funeral Home, Shafer-Winans Chapel. A celebration of life will be held in May.
