NILES -- Norman "Ludy" Gatta, 101, passed Sunday, Jan. 25, 2026, at St. Joseph Warren Hospital.
Norman was born July 11, 1924, in Warren, a son of Pasquale and Antonetta Toriello Gatta. His full name was Onorio "Norman" Anthony Gatta. Baptism records later showed his middle name as Federico; however, Anthony was what he passed on to his namesake. To those who knew him best, he was fondly referred to as "Ludy." The origin of his name, how it came to be, was often discussed. No matter what name you knew him by, the remarkable human being behind the name is what will be remembered most.
Norman, a son of Italian immigrant parents, was drafted straight out of high school on June 28, 1943; and although he eventually served along with his brothers in the United States military, he was the first one in his family to be drafted and the last to return home.
He was a private first class in the Army 9th Division Company I, 60th Infantry Regiment, as well as the 680th Quartermaster Laundry. He fought in World War II and in D-Day +1. He was the recipient of a Purple Heart with 2 clusters; the Good Conduct Medal; a European-African-Middle Eastern (EAME) Service Medal with 3 bronze stars; the Victory Medal; and multiple other battle stars.
Norman didn't like to think back on his time at war due to the things he saw and the people he lost; however, he was always so proud to have served his country. While in the service, he had a sweetheart at home to whom he made a promise to make it back, which motivated him to keep going during such a difficult time.
Norman was discharged Dec. 25, 1945. He arrived home on New Year's Eve at the Pennsylvania train station in Niles. His uncle picked him up and brought him home. Upon his return, he was reunited with his parents and his sweetheart, later to become his wife. After reuniting with his family, his wish was to sit down at the kitchen table, where he ate an entire jar of hot peppers, solidifying the fact he was truly home.
Not long after being home, Norman married the love of his life, Santa Garito Gatta, on May 18, 1946, to whom he was happily married for 71 years before she passed away in 2017. Once married, the couple started a family, leading to the second proudest moment of his life, becoming a father for the first time in 1947.
Norman retired from Ohio Corrugating Company and was a lifelong member of the Bagnoli Club. He was an avid sports fan, loved playing bocce or a competitive game of cornhole well into his 90s, and enjoyed homemade Italian food and gathering with family and friends. Norman was the last of his siblings and the oldest World War II veteran in the area when he passed.
Norman was a strong and determined man, and with all that he experienced in life, how could he not be? He lived a long, happy, independent life in the home he built up until the day he passed, and he is now at peace with God and once again reunited with his wife. He will truly be missed, but we know we will see him again one day.
His legacy lives on through the many generations he leaves behind. It is through his life that we hold the example of a hero, veteran, devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, friend and most of all, the patriarch of our family.
He will be deeply missed by a sister-in-law, Constance (Toto) Gatta; his two sons, Patrick A. Gatta (Sandra) of Poland and Norman A. Gatta Jr. (Pam) of Niles; two daughters, Annette Soltesz (Ken) and Mary Ann M. Kovacich (Joseph) of Niles; eight grandchildren, Nicole Foeller (Drew), Allison Foster van Dijk (Christian), Kristie Lombard (Christopher), Ryan Soltesz (Janette), Andrea Gatta, Joseph Kovacich (Samantha), Melissa Sullivan and Michael Kovacich (Tara); 12 great-grandchildren, Austin, Keira, Reilly, Jaimee, Roman, Jobee, Jaiden, Jaxon, Jace, Madison, Maximus and Maria; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins that round out the extended Gatta family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Santa Garito Gatta; his parents, Pasquale and Antonetta Gatta; his four brothers, Lawrence Gatta (Bertha), Dominick Gatta (Marilyn), Anthony Gatta (Roslyn) and Jerry Gatta; and a sister, Rose Aurilio (Louis).
Friends may call from 1 until the time of the 2 p.m. funeral service on Friday, Jan. 30, 2026, at the Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles.
Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery.
