FOWLER -- Mary Beth Peterson Murphy, 68, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 11, 2026, after courageously living with diabetes for many years.
She was born April 17, 1957, in Warren, to the Rev. Kenneth and Carolyn Peterson.
Beth attended Laird Avenue School through the sixth grade while living in the parsonage of the Calvary Presbyterian Church with her family in Warren. She went on to graduate from Lakeview High School, Class of 1975, and spent 30 years as a billing clerk with the local hospital system.
Affectionately known as "Gibby" to her beloved grandchildren, Beth leaves behind the love of her life and husband of 48 years, Douglas Murphy, whom she married Sept. 2, 1977.
She is also survived by her children, whom she loved, Ryan (Jill) Murphy of Fowler, Kaitlyn (Justin) Tokarczyk of Boston and Marc Murphy, also of Fowler; her adored grandchildren, Wesley and Jacob Murphy; her sister, Judith (Dan) Graham; her in-laws, Don and Grace Murphy; her faithful golden retriever, Kelley; her cat, Buster; and many other treasured family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father; her brother, Bradley Peterson; and her sister, Rebecca Peterson Bodkin.
Beth will be remembered for her generous spirit, her role as a "second mom" to countless children, her sharp wit and the tremendous love she showed for those around her. She enjoyed cooking, camping, reading, beach vacations, cheering for the Buckeyes and Browns, and most of all, spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren.
In place of calling hours, a celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 2026, at Bazetta Christian Church, 4131 Hoagland Blackstub Road, Cortland.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bazetta Christian Church Memorial Fund.
