Lawrence Bortmas 1952-2026
FOWLER — Lawrence Edward Bortmas, affectionately known as “Larry,” passed away peacefully Monday, Jan. 12, 2026, at his home in Fowler, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born Feb. 25, 1952, in Warren, Larry’s life was a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit.
A Maplewood High School graduate of Mecca, Larry carried on the family legacy as a third-generation concrete worker for six decades. His dedication to his craft was evident in his successful career as the owner-operator of LB Concrete. Larry’s life was marked by a profound love for his family.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Darleen Heverley Bortmas, and their cherished children, Eric Bortmas, Craig (Cate Owens) Bortmas, Jackie (Michael) Thomas, Jessica (Jeff) Homady and Joel (Sara) Judice. His legacy continues through his seven adored grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his life. Larry is also survived by his sisters, Debra Parr and Teresa Bortmas, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends who will miss his humor and generosity.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his child, Jonah Carlson; and one granddaughter.
Beyond his work and family, he was an avid deer hunter and ice fisherman. His love for these activities was only surpassed by the pleasure he took in spending quality time with his family and friends. The memories created during these moments are now treasured keepsakes for all who knew him. Those who knew Larry would describe him as loving, funny and generous. His laughter was infectious and his willingness to lend a helping hand was limitless. Larry’s sense of humor brought light into the lives of many and his generous spirit touched the hearts of those around him. His absence will be deeply felt, but the warmth of his love will continue to comfort his family and friends.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
