George D. Porter 1937-2026
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — George Darwin Porter passed away on Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, in Nashville, Tennessee, where he has resided since 2018. Previously, he lived in Naperville, Illinois, for 34 years, and prior to that, he was a resident of Warren for 13 years.
Born in Dayton, Pa., on July 25, 1937, Porter graduated from Dayton High School in 1955. He then attended Robert Morris University School, majoring in accountancy and business administration. Next, he served three years in the U.S. Army, data processing unit, and was promoted to sergeant before being honorably discharged.
Porter was a designated certified computing professional by the Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals. A career in data processing, sales and then management ensued. Porter sold 80-column cards, magnetic tape and computer supplies for Pryor Corporation while living in Warren. In 1981, Porter relocated his family to Naperville after being promoted to vice president of sales for Pryor; he was later named its president and chief operating officer.
In the early 1990s, his career transitioned to public service, beginning with a four-year term as a Naperville Township Trustee. He ran and was elected to serve as the supervisor of Naperville Township in 1993. He was re-elected in 1997, 2001 and 2005, serving four consecutive terms.
Porter played a key role in regional planning as a member of the Implementation Team for the DuPage Area Transit Plan and as a contributor to the Pace Suburban Bus Service Citizens Advisory Board. He was recognized in 2003 by the DuPage Center for Independent Living for outstanding commitment to the Americans with Disabilities Act and he received the “Ramp-Arts” Award from the City of Naperville mayor’s advisory commission on persons with disabilities.
In 2004, the National Association of Towns and Townships presented Porter with the Grassroots Government Leadership Award and he also received a Distinguished Alumni Award from his alma mater, Robert Morris University.
Upon retirement in 2009, Porter was recognized for an extensive career in public service by the 96th General Assembly of the State of Illinois.
While in Warren, Porter was active in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the Shiners and the Scottish Rite. He was a Mason for 56 years, initiated, passed and raised initially through the Carroll F. Clapp Lodge No. 655 in Warren, Ohio, in 1969.
Porter is survived by his wife, Charlotte; children, George, Faye (Chip McGee), Joseph (Shane Gibbons), and David; and three granddaughters, Sophia, Ava and Lillian.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five siblings; his granddaughter, Olivia; and many extended family members, friends and colleagues.
The family will receive friends Friday, Jan. 9, 2026, at the Hibbett and Hailey Funeral Home, in Nashville, with a service and a celebration of life on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026, also at the funeral home.
Final interment will be in the Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, also in Nashville.
