WARREN -- Presbytera Mary Grammaticas Michelis, 97, of Warren and of York, Maine, fell asleep in the Lord on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born Oct. 26, 1928, she was the beloved wife of the late Rev. Dionysios Michelis and loving daughter of Euthimios and Thalia Grammaticas.
Presbytera is survived by her son, Peter Michelis of Warren; daughter, Thalia and son-in-law, Peter Anestis of York, Maine; and as well as her grandson, John Peter Anestis of Portland, Maine.
Presbytera was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Father Danny Michelis, who passed Aug. 9, 2017; and two brothers, Dr. Andrew and Chris Grammaticas. She also leaves behind nieces and nephews, Chris, William, Katie and Peter.
Presbytera Mary met the love of her life, Dionysios "Father Danny," in Hyannis, Massachusetts, and the couple were married there at the church of St. George on Nov. 12, 1950. Their first parish was St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. They were later transferred to Warren, where they settled, serving the parish of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.
Presbytera Mary's deep Orthodox faith and heritage was a vital part of her life, passing those beliefs lovingly on to her children and grandchild. She taught Sunday school for many years and, together with her husband, was instrumental in the growth of their beloved parish, serving its faithful for 48 years.
Presbytera Mary looked at family and friends as if they were the same and wanted all to feel welcomed in her presence. She was an amazing cook and baker as well as being an accomplished painter. She also enjoyed sewing and gardening, but her greatest joy was being with family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 429 High St. NE, Warren, OH 44481.
Funeral and interment will take place in New Hampshire, where she will rest with her husband. She will be greatly missed. May her memory be eternal.
