Mary O’Brien 1942-2025

MCDONALD — Mary O’Brien, 83, passed away peacefully at her home Sunday evening, Dec. 14, 2025.

Mary was born Nov. 10, 1942, in Niles, the daughter of the late John and Helen Phillips Koncsol.

Mary was a 1960 graduate of Niles McKinley High School and dedicated her life to raising and caring for her family.

In addition to being a wonderful homemaker, Mary served her community for many years. When her daughters were growing up, she helped out as a Girl Scout troop leader and softball coach, as well as a member of PEGS (Parent Educator Group). She was also actively involved with the American Red Cross, McDonald Community Chest and ladies auxiliary for the McDonald Fire Department.

Mary enjoyed bowling, crossword puzzles, reading and fixing jigsaw puzzles. She loved watching her children and grandchildren as they participated in their sports and activities, and spent decades as an avid fan of McDonald High School’s cross country and track and field teams. Mary and her late husband, Mike, spent their retirement years as treasure hunters and connoisseurs of unique finds at garage sales, flea markets and auctions.

Mary was a loving mother of four daughters, Mary Michele (Rick) Dunn of Youngstown, Patricia O’Brien of Austintown, Elaine (Chris) Rupe of Cortland and Lisa (Darrel) Zeck of Terre Haute, Indiana. She was a proud grandmother of 10 grandchildren, Emily and Nina Dunn, Connor Stevens, Brenna, Braden, Brody and Bria Rupe, and Devon, Lauren and Dylan Zeck. Mary will always be remembered by her sister-in-law, Jackie (Richard) Ferraro; her brothers, William and Michael Koncsol; and numerous nieces and nephews

Her husband of 55 years, Michael J. O’Brien, whom she married Feb. 8, 1964, passed away March 3, 2019.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mary was preceded in death by her siblings, Margie Sharbon, Elizabeth “Betty” Fortune, Andrew Konsol, John Koncsol, Steven Koncsol, Joseph Koncsol, Helen Tarr and Thomas Koncsol.
