GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Karen DeCapito Smith, 69, formerly of Warren, passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2025.
Born Oct. 24, 1956, in Warren, she was the daughter of John DeCapito Jr. and Helen Giaurtis DeCapito.
Karen was a 1974 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School and later attended education-related courses as part of her work in the school system.
Karen dedicated her career to health care and education, working as a health technician and a classroom assistant at Ironwood Elementary School. She was involved in programs supporting students, volunteered frequently in school activities and served as a chaperone on many memorable field trips -- including to the Catalina Islands -- experiences she treasured and spoke of fondly throughout her life. For a brief moment, she was a precinct committee person when she lived in Glendale, Arizona.
Karen had a lifelong love for her dogs and personally rescued and cared for many over the years. Her compassion was quiet but constant, and she was known for sprinkling kindness everywhere she went. Independent by nature, devoted in heart and fiercely loyal to those she loved, Karen shared a unique and incredible bond with her mother, calling her every day without fail.
Karen is survived by her mother, Helen DeCapito of Warren; her husband, Dan Smith of Glendale; her brother, John DeCapito III of Las Vegas, Nevada; her sister, Elaine DeCapito of Warren; and her nieces, Carli and Danielle DeCapito of Reno, Nevada.
Her father, John DeCapito Jr., preceded her in death.
In honoring Karen's wishes, cremation has taken place.
Calling hours will be 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2025, at Staton-Borowski Funeral Home, where services will follow at 2 p.m.
Final placement of her cremated remains will take place in Pineview Memorial Park.
