Walter Mintus Jr. 1940-2025

HOWLAND -- Walter Mintus Jr., 84, was called home to heaven on Friday, Nov. 7, 2025, at his home in hospice care.

He was born Dec. 16, 1940, in Royal, Pa., and was raised in Ralph, Pa. Walter was the son of Walter Mintus Sr. and Stephanie Moskal Mintus. Walter graduated from German Township School District in 1959 and moved to Warren afterwards to obtain employment with Republic Steel. Walter was a proud union member of USWA Local 1375. He worked in various positions for Republic Steel / LTV Steel / WCI Steel and finally retired in 2005 as a loader in the rolling and finishing department with 46 years of service.

Walter previously was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Slovak Club until he devoted his time to his family. He was of the Catholic faith; he attended St. Joseph Church and later SS. Peter and Paul Church in Warren.

Walter was proud of his Polish heritage. He loved Polish foods and polka music. He was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates.

Walter had two cocker spaniels he loved, Muffin and Buffy.

Walter leaves behind his loving wife of 48 years, Barbara, whom he married May 7, 1977, and his two children, Walter J. Mintus III of Howland and John Mintus of Girard. Walter also leaves behind a sister, Joanne Holupka of West Farmington, and two sisters-in-law, Gloria Mintus of Champion and Melanie Mintus of Vienna. In addition, he leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents and by two brothers, Joseph Mintus and John Mintus. Also, Walter was preceded in death by many aunts and uncles.

The family would like to thank Patriot at Home Care for providing exceptional care for their father and husband during his illness and his last days.

Family and friends may call noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, 2025, at Staton-Borowski Funeral Home, where services will be held at 1 p.m.
