HOWLAND -- Lyle L. Hefner, 76, passed away after a long illness on Wednesday morning, Oct. 8, 2025, at the Hospice House.
Lyle was born on Feb. 17, 1949, in Warren, to the late Raymond and Elizabeth Hefner of Cortland.
Upon graduating from Lakeview High School in 1967, he was drafted into the Army and served in Vietnam. After the service, he worked in a foundry then later became a security policeman at the 910th Tactical Airlift Group in Vienna.
That is where Lyle joined as a reservist and became a full-time aircraft mechanic with the 910th maintenance group.
He was deployed several times in support operations in South West Asia, Germany, Uzbekistan, and many missions in support of the aerial spray operations. He retired at the rank of Master Sergeant with the U.S. Air Force.
He married Susette Liddle on Sept. 6, 2006. On their property he always had a project he was working on, whether it was building bridges, a chicken coop, doghouse, raised garden beds, frames for his beehives, replacing a furnace, roof or window. He was very knowledgeable about trees and plants that he planted on the property.
Besides his wife, he leaves behind nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Marybeth Thomas; and his parents.
At his request, there are no calling hours or services.
