GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Joan G. Bernier, 89, formerly of Cortland, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2025, at St. Paul's Senior Living Community in Greenville.
She was born Jan. 15, 1936, in Memphis, Tennessee, a daughter of Louis K. and Marion C. Bishop Gray.
Joan attended high school at Misses Howard's School for Girls in Birmingham, Alabama, and also All Saints Episcopal School in Vicksburg, Mississippi, before attending the University of Alabama, where she met and married her husband, Richard N. Bernier of Boston, Massachusetts. During their marriage they resided in several states including New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Illinois and Virginia, before settling in Ohio.
She was an exquisite homemaker who loved raising her children, then was the caretaker for her husband for 23 years. Joan was an avid reader and enjoyed learning, especially studying Scriptures. She had a fondness for maps, which was tied to her love of missions. She made many friends of Christian missionaries who served throughout the world and quietly supported them for many years.
Precious memories of Joan live on with her three sons, Stephen N. (Karen) of Farmville, Virginia, David R.(Carmen) of Fairborn, Ohio, and Philip L. Bernier (Bonita) of Morgantown, W.Va.; her daughter, Jennifer Scales (Eric) of Greenville, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her beloved husband of 65 years, Richard N. Bernier, whom she married March 5, 1955, and who passed Dec. 31, 2020; and her sister, Ann Louise (Gray) Lucia.
There are no services or calling hours.
Joan and Richard will be interred at a later date in Hillside Cemetery, Cortland.
