Lynn Douglas Barnes 1941-2025

CORTLAND — Lynn Douglas Barnes, 83, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2025, surrounded by family, after a brief illness due to a fall.

Lynn was born Aug. 6, 1941, in Oil City, Pa., to Mona Grace Kerchner and Chester James Barnes.

He graduated from Oil City High School in 1959. He then proudly served in the U.S. Air Force. He was discharged due to bone cancer which resulted in an amputation and his being a 65-year cancer survivor. After returning from the Air Force, he married his wife of 62 years, Maxine Mamott, followed by attendance at Alliance College in Cambridge Springs, Pa., where he received an associate degree in drafting.

Lynn worked as a draftsman in many local businesses including Ajax, Van Huffel Tube, Venetta’s and ADS Machinery, where he met many lifelong friends. He was a longtime member of St. Robert Catholic Church, where he went on several mission trips to Mexico to work on construction projects for a school and collected aluminum cans for the church.

Lynn enjoyed being out on his riding mower and taking care of his lawn. He also liked reading mystery and suspense novels, even keeping track of the novels he read. He also loved classic cars and could identify a car’s make, model and year by sight. He had a ’55 Chevy truck that he had been working on for many years.

He will be remembered by his friends and family for his kind heart, his willingness to lend a helping hand and his iconic handlebar mustache.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine; four children, Douglas Barnes, Walter Barnes (Celeste), Matthew Barnes (Jim) and Kelly Fannin (Ben); five grandchildren, Nathan Kirk, Garret Braden, Karl Fannin, Tobias Fannin and Emma Fannin; brother, David Barnes; and sister, Bonnie Jean Smutek.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Vincent Barnes.

Calling hours will be 11 a.m., followed by a funeral service at noon Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in Cortland.
