WARREN -- Evelyne Joyce Byers-Rogers, "WD8KEM," 79, passed away Monday, Nov. 11, 2024, in Fowler.
She was born May 25, 1945, in Brimfield, the daughter of the late Avie Don Balista and Betty Jane Thompson Balista.
Evelyne graduated from Champion High School, Class of 1963, where she was the head majorette for three-and-a-half years and was also a member of the choir and glee club.
Evelyne worked at Packard Electric from 1965 to 1968. She then began being a homemaker of her two children, Edward Sean Byers of Henderson, Nevada, and Roberta Michelle Byers-Cykon (Michael) of Fowler.
On Feb. 5, 1964, she married her first husband, the late Arnold Edward "Ed" Byers in Chesterfield, South Carolina, with whom she spent the next 28 years, until they divorced in June of 1992.
Evelyne served at times as the Ham Fest Chairwoman of the Warren Ham Radio Association in the 1970s and 1980s, due to Ed being the Ham Radio Association president. Ed and Evelyne spent many hours helping many young enthusiasts study for their licenses and many ham radio operators build their rigs.
Ed, WB8WMS and Evelyne, WD8KEM, were called the "73's Ed and Eve." They spent much time as a couple participating in Ham Fests, expeditions and training recruits. They were very proud of their rigs, built in Warren, 1970s Tempo 2020-2 KW Clipperton L March 10 7 el. at 50'-20 mar.4 el. at 70' March 15 5 el. at 95'. The 95' Rig was the tallest in Warren during their Ham Radio careers.
In 1982, Evelyne was certified through JCPenney's Wilton cake decorating courses at the Eastwood Mall, where she began as a beginner and completed courses through advanced cake decorating. Evelyne enjoyed entering cake decorating competitions and placed second for her 50th Anniversary cake.
In 1989, Evelyne began working at Jamestown Giant Eagle and was the founder of the Eagles Nest newsletter. Because of Evelyne's bright personality and teamwork, she had the opportunity to work in various areas in the store when a position needed to be filled, from floral and bakery to customer service and cashier. She retired as the salad bar manager in 1996.
On Sept. 22, 1994, Evelyne married her second husband, the late Donnie C. Rogers Sr., in Newton Falls. They were married for 22 years. Evelyne and Donnie participated in Fort Newton country music shows, where they both loved performing together in front of audiences.
Evelyne loved spending her time and playing cards with Tom Cykon, collecting plants and flowers, butterflies, dolls and angels, doing word search puzzles, watching "Everybody Loves Raymond" and listening to music.
Evelyne leaves behind her twin sister, Avalina J. Balista of Akron, Anthony R. Balista of Warren and Lela F. Balista of Rootstown. Evelyne also leaves three grandchildren, Brandon Michael Piros of Hubbard, and Sean Edward Byers and Breyanna Renee Byers of Henderson, Nevada; and a great-granddaughter, Isabella Olive Michelle Piros of Hubbard.
Evelyne would like to thank everyone over the years who had taken the time to be a part of helping her have the best quality of life possible. A very special thank you to Melanie Campbell, Isabel Logan, Renate Callow, Sabine Johnson, Aliza Prokop, Samantha Southwick, Rebecca Robinson, Matthew Park, Bobby Heasley, Danielle and Dakota Moore, and Christine Pandone; River Run Apartments staff; the many Putt-Putt of Warren Family (customers) that would take the time to talk to Evelyne at the course; Dr. Kapil Kwatra and his staff; and the members of Traditions Hospice team staff that assisted Evelyne in her final days.
There are no services. Cremation has taken place.
