NEWTON FALLS -- Walter T. Wortman, a devoted family man, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at the age of 81.
Born Nov. 10, 1942, to Walter H. and Anne Benich Wortman, Walter grew up in Newton Falls, a community he would call home for his entire life. He was a 1960 graduate of Newton Falls High School and went on to play football, under scholarship, for Youngstown State University (YSU).
On Dec. 7, 1963, Walter married his beloved wife, Alice Dianne James and they enjoyed 60 years of wedded bliss, a testament to the foundation upon which they built a remarkable family. Until its closing in 2001, after 30-plus years of service as a millwright for Copperweld / CSC, Walter retired and devoted his time to the pursuit of his passions and cherished moments with his family.
Walter was an avid bowler, golfer and loved throwing horseshoes and playing cards. He was a fervent supporter of the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians, The Ohio State Buckeyes, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Youngstown State Penguins, never missing an opportunity to cheer them on. His loyalty extended to his alma mater, Newton Falls High School, where he passionately followed the achievements of the school's teams.
Walter leaves behind his loving wife, Alice Dianne Wortman; their two children, Lori (Chris) Rankin and Walter (Danielle) Wortman; five grandchildren, Brooke (Jason), Chad (Rachael), Lauren (Alex), Brittany and Christopher; and four great-grandchildren, Nolan, Cooper, River and Rylee.
A celebration of Walter's life will be held with calling hours from 4 to 6 p.m. followed by a short service on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at Borowski Memorial Home of Newton Falls. Friends and family can gather at the Newton Falls VFW, following services, to honor his memory and share a meal and cherished moments.
