WARREN -- Richard Dale "Shorty" Stevenson, 83, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, spending his last days surrounded by his daughter after a short battle with throat cancer.
Richard was born June 19, 1940, in Leechburg, Pa., the third son of Thomas and Alda Knepshield Stevenson.
On June 17, 1983, he married the love of his life, Nancy J. Love, and they spent the next 37 years happily married until her passing in September 2020.
Shorty was a tow motor operator at Packard Electric, retiring in 1997. His service extended beyond his workplace, as he was a Vietnam veteran of the United States Navy. His loyalty was to his country and fellow veterans, as he was a proud member of the VFW Post 1090 of Warren, considering all his veteran friendships among the most valuable.
He enjoyed being outdoors, whether hunting, fishing or camping with his family. He had a loyal hunting dog of 12 years, Pup-Pup. He would always make time to attend sporting events, such as an Indians game or boxing match with family and friends. As a long history "buff," he loved taking both "Nancy's" on weekend trips to visit presidential memorial sites and sharing his love for history. His favorite tradition was taking his daughter to Presque Isle State Park, Lake Erie, every Fourth of July.
Shorty and his wife, Nancy, enjoyed traveling worldwide, including places such as The Holy Land, Scotland, England, Peru, Hawaii and Alaska. He loved taking pictures of Nancy during their travels and he would take her out dancing, where they would Honky Tonk to their favorite songs played on the Jukebox. He also was a die-hard Steelers fan; he and Nancy would watch the game together.
He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Elaine Hensley; his four grandchildren, Jordan C. (Carly) Hensley of Howland, Jenna M. Hensley of Warren, Autumn J. Hensley of Austintown, and Alex J. Hensley of Howland; six great-grandchildren; sister, Linda (Ken) Livengood of Ford City, Pa.; brother, William (Phyllis) Stevenson of Baltimore, Maryland; and his very best lifelong best friend, Lynn Romine of Cortland.
In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by his beloved wife, Nancy J. Love Stevenson; sons, Richard Brian Stevenson and Kenneth Barton Stevenson; sister, Sandy Glowatski; and brothers, Daniel Stevenson and Robert "Ron" Stevenson.
Services will be at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home.
Family and friends are invited to honor Shorty's memory during calling hours from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 2024. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2024; Pastor Rodney Mullins of Life Church in Leavittsburg will officiate.
Richard's interment will be in Crown Hill Burial Park, Vienna.
