Dorothy E. Sideropolis 1937-2024

CHAGRIN FALLS -- Dorothy Elaine Galanos Sideropolis died peacefully at Arden Courts Assisted Living on Thursday morning, April 11, 2024.

She was born June 21, 1937, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, the daughter of Steven Peter and Georgia Frances Polas Galanos.

Dorothy married Ernest "Sidd" Sideropolis on Jan. 27, 1957; and had two daughters, Georgene Eva Kohlbacher (Brian) of Strongsville, and Stefanie Ann Currington (Todd) of Chagrin Falls.

Dorothy retired in 2008 as a consumer and family science teacher, after 36 years at Warren City Schools. She previously worked six years at the Union Savings and Trust Bank as an IBM operator. She leaves two wonderful sons-in-law, and two adorable grandchildren, Jax and Kelsi Currington; many nieces and nephews; and her two sisters, Patrica Jean Kosmas (Charles), and Constance Marie Szymzack (Ken). Her devoted husband, Ernest, passed away in September 1984, after only 27 years of marriage.

Our mother felt volunteering was so rewarding and necessary both physically and mentally. Dorothy was a member of the Upton House Historical Society; the past president of Warren Junior Women's League, for 45 years; a member of TAG, Trumbull Art Gallery; and the past president of the Daughters of Penelope, receiving their Club Woman of the Year award in 1998, 2006 and 2010, for outstanding work. She volunteered at the New Life Maternity Home for two years, teaching young new mothers nutritious and economical meals. Dorothy was a Girl Scout leader for six years, taking them to Camp Sugarbush; was on the board for League of Women Voters; was a member of the Arcadian club; and helped raise money to purchase a kidney machine for a hospital in Greece. She was treasurer, for 10 years, of the women's auxiliary of St. Demetrios Church's Philoptochos Society. She applied and received a grant from the Warren Tribune Chronicle for Someplace Safe to provide bedding, curtains and cleaning supplies for Make A Difference Day. Dorothy helped raise money for AHEPA to purchase a stove, a microwave and a floor model mixer. She was past president of the Church Senior Club; member of the Warren City Federation and the Trumbull County Federation and was a member of Yasou Club for seniors. Every month Dorothy worked serving at our community dinners and also donating a full dinner every year for 200 to 300 people. The newest club she joined was TRTA (Trumbull Retired Teachers Association). These are the things we know she enjoyed, as education was very important to her. She was a certified elementary principal and a secondary principal.

Dorothy's legacy will be remembered as such by her grandchildren: "She was by far the strongest person we knew; teaching us the importance of independence, as well as standing up for what you believe in, no matter what. We thank the Lord that he blessed our family with such a wonderful woman who kept us tied together and reminded us of the importance of our Greek Orthodox religion and heritage. Thinking of her reuniting with her husband, our Papou, after all of these years, in Heaven, brings us to tears."

Family and friends may visit and pay tribute to Dorothy from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 15, 2024, at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel of Warren, 1884 North Road NE, and again from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 429 High St. NE, Warren, OH 44481.

A Funeral Liturgy will follow calling hours at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at the church, with the Rev. Constantine Valantasis presiding.

Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made, in Dorothy's name, to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 429 High St. NE, Warren, OH 44481.

A special thanks goes to the health care professionals at Arden Courts Assisted Living in Chagrin Falls, for their care, love, compassion and support of Dorothy throughout her stay.
