CORTLAND -- Joan "Joanie" Johnson, a cherished soul known for her loving nature, kind-heartedness and infectious humor, passed away peacefully at her residence in Cortland on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024, after a courageous battle with a terminal illness.
Born on Nov. 28, 1964, in Cleveland, Joanie's zest for life and her unwavering spirit left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Joanie's life was a tapestry of love and laughter, woven with the joys of family and friendship.
She is survived by her devoted daughter, Amanda Durch, and her son-in-law, Craig Brown, who were the lights of her life. Her fiance, William Braham, stood by her side as a beacon of love and support. Joanie was a beloved sister to Jeannie Sampson, and she held fond memories of her late siblings, Janet Blair and Jimmy Sampson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wavie Jude Sampson and Willard Sampson. Joanie's legacy continues through the lives of her four adored grandchildren and the many nieces and nephews who were blessed to call her "Aunt Joanie."
Throughout her life, Joanie was a hardworking individual, dedicating many years as a labor worker before her well-earned retirement. Her commitment to her work was matched only by her dedication to her family and friends. Joanie's involvement in her community and associations was a testament to her belief in the value of solidarity and mutual support.
A hippie at heart, Joanie found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She was a lover of music, often found with a tune on her lips or swaying to the rhythms that spoke to her soul. Her home was a hub of warmth and hospitality, where she hosted countless get-togethers that were the highlight of many social calendars. Joanie's affinity for sunflowers was known to all; their bright and sunny faces reflected her own optimistic outlook on life. Concerts were a particular favorite of hers, a space where she could let loose and be surrounded by the harmonies that resonated with her free spirit.
To describe Joanie as loving, kind and funny is to capture just a glimpse of the wonderful person she was. Her laughter was a melody that could brighten the darkest of days and her kindness was a gentle breeze that soothed troubled hearts. Joanie's love was a shelter, steadfast and unconditional, enveloping her family and friends in its comforting embrace.
Joanie's life was one of vibrant colors and heartfelt melodies, a journey of joy and an example of how to live with authenticity and grace. She will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of walking a path alongside her. Joanie's memory will be treasured, her stories retold with smiles, and her legacy will continue to flourish in the lives of those she loved.
As the sun sets on a life so beautifully lived, we bid farewell to Joan "Joanie" Johnson, a woman whose essence was as radiant and nurturing as the sunflowers she adored. In our hearts, she remains an eternal beacon of love, guiding us with her laughter and reminding us to embrace each day with kindness and joy. Joanie's spirit, forever youthful and free, dances on in the echoes of the music she loved and in the cherished memories held dear by all who were graced by her presence.
Joanie did not want any services, just cremation and a celebration of life to be determined at a later time.
Arrangements of Joan were entrusted to Borowski Funeral Services and Oak Meadow Cremation Services.
