John Gibson Woodall 1939-2021
TALLMADGE — John G. Woodall, of Tallmadge, died Saturday, May 15, 2021, at Heather Knoll Nursing Home in Tallmadge.
He was born Dec. 8, 1939, in Youngstown, the son of Rev. William L. and Roberta Gibson Woodall.
He attended schools in Girard, Iowa City, Iowa, Vienna and Five Points, Ala. He was graduated from Vienna High School in 1958, the College of Wooster in 1962, with a degree in art and later attended the Pittsburgh Institute, further pursing and honoring his artistic talents which he then applied commercially in and around the Pittsburgh area, before retiring to Ohio and working in food service at Kent State University.
He served his country proudly in the United States Army, stationed in Fort Jackson, N.C., Fort Belvoir, Va. and Fort Bliss, Texas. He was designated as a sharpshooter — rifle and marksman — carbine. Prior to his honorable discharge, he received a letter of appreciation, a letter of commendation and a good conduct medal.
John was admired, respected and envied for his artistic talents. While in the Army, he was a construction draftsman. He later designed the logo for Leetonia’s 1966 Centennial. Although he did not leave an overwhelming number of his artistic works, his walls and those of his relatives were festooned with his meticulous, coveted paintings and drawings.
He was an ordained elder in the Presbyterian church and a member of MENSA. His friends and acquaintances enjoyed his quick wit, his sense of humor and his intelligence.
John’s memories will be cherished by his wife, Patricia A. Woodall of Stow; his brother, Dallas Woodall of Warren; his sister, Susan E. Manos of Blacklick; a nephew and several nieces; and Patricia’s daughter, Lisa Haughawout of North Canton.
He was predeceased by his parents; and his brother, Robert B. Woodall, a popular Grandview Heights, Ohio, school teacher, who died in October 2001.
John had many interests. He enjoyed sailing, movies, reading, attending sports car races and volunteering at Nelson Ledges Raceway, working crossword puzzles and other endeavors, all of which he was quite adept.
Cremation has taken place. A private graveside service, with military honors, was held at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Seville.
