BRISTOLVILLE -- James A. Werner, 100, passed away peacefully at 4:54 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, 2021, at the Country Club Manor of Newton Falls, where he was a resident for several days following a one-month illness.
James was born in Struthers on March 15, 1921, the son of Alfred H. and Hazel Stevenson Werner.
James attended the local schools and entered the Army on Jan. 3, 1940, and was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant Oct. 27, 1945. During his years of service he was a radio operator in the South Pacific and was a survivor of the attack at Pearl Harbor and received five Battle Stars. James was an active ham radio operator, locksmith and enjoyed model trains. He also had a small photography business for several years. James was employed in the production and tool and die departments for Delphi Packard Electric for over 35 years and he retired in 1983.
James is survived by two daughters, Cathy (Leonard) Shannon of Rootstown and Sheri (Eric) Nellis of Bristolville; three sisters, Alice O'Brien of Girard, Marjorie Watson of Mansfield and Dorothy (Richard) Meyers of Euclid; seven grandchildren, Matthew (Holly) Shannon, Daniel (Lisa) Shannon, Megan Shannon, Eric (Veronica) Nellis II, Amanda (Ryan) Machuzak, Nathan Nellis and Leah Nellis; and nine great-grandchildren.
James was preceded in death by his wife, the former Thelma N. Dulaney Werner, whom he married Sept. 5, 1953, and she preceded him in death Oct. 28, 1988; son, James A. Werner Jr. who died Oct. 18, 1989; daughter, Joyce Werner, who died Nov. 2, 1989; brother, Carl Werner; and two sisters, Mary Bentley and Ida Kadleck.
Calling hours will be Sunday, Oct. 24, 2021, at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home, Niles, from 2 to 4 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home on Monday, Oct. 25, 2021, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Susan Tatarka officiating. Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery.
