CORTLAND -- Francis H. Mendenhall, 93, of Cortland, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2021, at his home, with his daughter and granddaughter by his side.
He was born Aug. 5, 1927, in Warren, the son of the late Charles and the late Helma Angstrom Mendenhall.
Francis was know by "Fran," "Mendy" and "Lieutenant." He served in the United States Army and was in Korea. Fran worked at American Welding and then Copperweld Steel, until he retired in 1989. He was plant protection LT, and a Trumbull County Deputy Sheriff.
Fran was a 32nd degree Mason with the Cortland Chapter, and received his 50-year pin.
Fran married his wife, the former Elsie Kirk, in 1959; and they spent 52 years together, until her passing in 2011.
He loved going to the family farm in Pennsylvania. He usually went every weekend and spent the entire summer there. He loved mowing, riding his 4-wheeler with his late sons-in-law, Bill Morelock and Dugald Campbell and daughter, Patty. Fran loved deer hunting with sons-in-law, Patty and his two grandsons, Allen and Willie.
Fran loved his Cleveland Indians, Browns and Ohio State. His daughter, Patty, took him to an Indians game with his two grandsons, John and Kenny, and he thought it was the greatest treat, riding in a limo. In his later years he loved going to casinos with Patty and Diane, going to the Slovak Club and Hollywood "with the Girls," and also, playing London Rum.
He loved going to his brother's farm and having great dinners made by his late sister-in-law, Noreen. Later, his nieces and nephews, Becky, Debbie, Richie, Renee, Kimmie, Jimmy, Chuck and Charlene (Alan), carried on the tradition -- cooking and having fun at the farm for dinners and birthdays.
Fran was a member of the Mecca Moose and loved to go sign up each week and have lunch with his daughters, granddaughter and many friends.
Fran is survived by his daughter, Patricia MacDonald Campbell of Mecca, daughter, Alicia Diane Carroll of California, son, James Kirk of Warren and daughter, Sandra L.
