GIRARD -- Harriet Mavrigian Kolitsos, 97, peacefully fell asleep in the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021, at Shepherd of the Valley in Liberty.
She was born Nov. 24, 1923, in Youngstown, to Andrew and Sophia Saviolas Mavrigian (Mavrigianakis), the second of six children in her family.
Harriet graduated from East High School in Youngstown and received her cosmetology, managerial and teaching licenses from Paramount Beauty School in Youngstown. She worked at several beauty shops and schools and also worked in retail in the area.
Harriet was active all her life in her church, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, and was a member of the choir and the Ladies Philoptochos Society. She served as president of the Parent Teacher Association at St. Nicholas Church.
Harriet adored her family, loved to cook and bake Greek cuisine, loved dancing and loved her cat.
She leaves to cherish her memory, a brother, Dr. Gus Mavrigian; a sister, Helen Modarelli; her children, Socrates Kolitsos, Maria (Victor) Cecil and Gloria (Timothy) Knotek; and daughter-in-law, Kathleen Kolitsos. She also leaves her grandchildren, Dr. Bryan Cecil, Amy (Eric) Russell, Constantine (Katherine) Kolitsos, Attorney Nicholas (Amanda) Kolitsos and Captain Demetrios (Ariana) Kolitsos, Sheena (Andrew) Suvak and Donya Suleiman; and 10 great-grandchildren, Sophia, Athanasios and Andrew Russell, Andrew, Mary, Thomas and Simon Kolitsos, Alexander Kolitsos, and Islaman and Aaliyah Suleiman; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Harriet was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Gust Kolitsos, whom she married Jan. 28, 1944 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Montreal, Canada. She was also preceded in death by a son, Fr. Andrew Kolitsos; brothers, Attorney Angelo Mavrigian and Steve Mavrigian; and a sister, Ann Farmakis.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, private services were held Thursday, Jan. 28, 2021 at 11 a.m. at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 220 N. Walnut St., Youngstown, OH 44503.
