CORTLAND -- Christopher J. Ahladis, 53, fell asleep in the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2020, at home surrounded by his wife and sister, after battling colon cancer.
He was born May 18, 1967, in Warren, the son of the late James and Elizabeth "Betty" Gates Ahladis and was a lifelong area resident.
Christopher graduated from Lakeview High School in Cortland in 1985. He served in the Navy from 1985 to 1989 as a hospital corpsman at Naval Hospital San Diego, Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, Calif. and aboard the USS Tuscaloosa-LST 1187.
After the Navy, he went to culinary school in San Diego, Calif. then went on to work at hotels and restaurants before becoming an over-the-road truck driver for 22 years. He was a driver instructor for TDDS Technical School and Schneider National. He drove for Transport America, Schneider, J.B. Hunt and FedEx Ground.
Christopher was an active member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church and more recently was a reader, reading the Psalms and Epistles.
He was also an active member of AA. He volunteered at the Youngstown Inter Group and served as treasurer for one of many meetings; he was also a sponsor.
He enjoyed reading, playing chess competitively in tournaments, playing drums and watching old classic black-and-white movies. He was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He is survived by his wife, the former Terri Ladner, whom he married on Oct. 4, 2010; sister, Sophia (Tom) Barnard of Schertz, Texas; niece and Goddaughter, Callie Barnard of West Hartford, Conn.; two nieces and nephew, Krista Ladner, Brian Ladner and Clarissa Ladner; several first cousins; aunts and uncles; and a "special niece," Amina Matijevic.
Family will receive friends on Friday, Dec. 11, 2020, from 5 until 7 p.m. in the Staton-Borowski Funeral Home, where there will be a Trisagion service recited at 5 p.m.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2020, at 10 a.m. at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 2053 North Road NE, Warren, with The Very Rev. Protopresbyter Kenneth Bachofsky, D. Min. and Father Constantine Valantasis officiating, where the body will lie in state from 9 a.m. until the hour of service in the church.
Burial will follow, with full military honors, in Oakwood Cemetery in Warren.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Nicholas Orthodox Church or the charity of the donor's choice.
The family, funeral home and church will be practicing social distancing and proper health care protocols. Due to the continued and increasing spread of COVID-19, the 6-foot social distancing rule will be honored and all guests must wear a mask. For the safety of everyone, we politely ask that all visitors exit the church (if not staying for the service) after paying their respects to the family. Please do not linger.
