Lawrence L. Melvin

1928-2017

KINSMAN -- Lawrence Laverne Melvin, 88, of Kinsman, died Saturday, March 11, 2017, at his home.

He was born Dec. 19, 1928, in Kinsman, a son of Lloyd J. Melvin Sr. and Belle Hobart Melvin.

A lifetime Kinsman area resident, Mr. Melvin was a 1946 graduate and class valedictorian of Vernon High School.

He owned and operated Melvin's TV & Appliance in Vernon for many years, and later was a rural mail carrier for the Kinsman Post Office for 23 years, retiring in 1997.

Mr. Melvin was a longtime member of the Kinsman Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Copper Penny Lodge 778 of Vienna. He enjoyed gardening and sharing his vegetables with friends and family, and he loved to take care of his yard and feed the birds.

Mr. Melvin married Betty J. Mathews on Nov. 7, 1947, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 25, 2005.

He is survived by his daughter, Bonnie (Bob) McDowall of Farmdale; his son, Robert (Cheryl) Melvin of Kinsman; his son, John "Jack" (Janine) Melvin of Orwell; his daughter, Cindy (Bruce) Ault of Williamsfield; his daughter-in-law, Mary Kay Melvin of Brookfield; 19 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded by his parents; his son, Donald Melvin; his great-grandson, Jeffrey Betts Jr.; and his three brothers, Lloyd Melvin Jr., Curtis Melvin and Hobart Melvin.

A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 16, 2017, at the Kinsman United Presbyterian Church, 6383 Church St., Kinsman, with the Rev. Susan Francis officiating.

A private burial will take place in Kinsman Cemetery.

Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 15 at Baumgardner Funeral & Cremation Service, 8569 Main St., Kinsman.
