Jack A. Huna 1920-2013

Jack was born June 25, 1920, in St. Paul, Minn.

After being commissioned a USNR lieutenant at Notre Dame, he served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Thetis Bay, an aircraft carrier. He then re-entered college and completed his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Minnesota.

Following marrying his wife of 63 years, Mildred Elaine Belville, he briefly lived in Milwaukee, Wis., the majority of his life in Warren, semi-retiring in Florida.

Jack was passionate about his work as an engineer. His successful career is marked with many achievements in the welding engineering field.

After an honorable discharge from the naval service, he facilitated revolutionizing the welding process, designing a new MIG (metallic inert gas) strategy that utilized aluminum wire and argon gas, initially for U.S. Navy applications. For this work, he received an award of commendation for the newly patented Aircomatic Welding Process.

As a young entrepreneur, he was founder and CEO of the Weld-Action Company, remaining active as a board member and consultant to his son, Todd Huna, who continues in his legacy of excellence in engineering.

The company designs and builds customized welding machinery. Jack developed a resistance brazing product line unique to the industry. To his legacy, Weld-Action machines facilitated the manufacturing of products: such as Reznor space-heating systems, automobile components; rail traction motors and transformers, to name a few.

During his professional tenure, he served as twice chairman of the local chapter of the American Welding Society, which he joined in 1937. His name and contributions will be memorialized at the national headquarters of the American Welding Society in Doral, Fla.

His hobbies included camping, hunting, fishing, skiing, exploring his remarkable United States, and inventing.

Jack was extremely proud and loving of his family, who beside his beloved wife and best friend Millie, included a son and two daughters, Todd of Warren, (wife, Mimi, children Daniel and Kathleen); Janeen Nichols of Warren (husband Ken, children Jacquelyn, Joshua); Marcie Calandra of Hinsdale, Ill., (late husband David, children Ashley, Nicole, Michelle and Patricia); as well as many other loving family members, friends and professional colleagues from St. Paul, Warren and Bonita Springs.

The family will celebrate Jack’s life on Thursday at Living Lord Lutheran Church, 851 Niles-Cortland Road N.E., Warren.

An open visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 am. at the church, followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m.

Jack will have his final rest with a military funeral honors ceremony and rifle salute at Crown Hill Cemetery, 3966 Warren-Sharon Road, Vienna.

The family would be blessed to have you join them to celebrate Jack’s life with family visitation time, 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Robert-Clark Lane Family Center, 2681 E. Market St., Warren. It will be a joyous time of shared memories.

Jack will be remembered with honor and devotion by his wife, children, grandchildren, family and friends, including his reoccurring teachings on the value and importance of hard work and “CS” (common sense).
