McDonald senior Malina Mitchell and junior Zach Gray were honored Thursday's Mahoning Valley Track Officials Association Awards Banquet at Enzo's.
Mitchell, who is heading to West Virginia University for cross country and track and field -- both which she was honored for Thursday -- was an outstanding cross country runner. However, that season was marred by stress fracture. She rebounded this spring with All-Ohio finishes in the Division II girls 1,600-meter run, helped the 4×400 team take second in a school-record time and the 4×800 team place fourth. The top eight in each event at state are named All-Ohio.
Meanwhile, McDonald junior Zach Gray, who made All-Ohio in the Division III boys discus and shot put, won the Bogan Reed Award.
He went from not making finals in the 2017 state meet boys discus to taking fifth in the shot and fourth in the discus -- a marked improvement as the McDonald thrower heads into his senior year.
At this year's Midwest Meet of Champions, a senior track and field event, held at Michigan State University Saturday, Mitchell took sixth in the girls 1,600 (5:07.82).
