NILES -- The Niles Board of Education met July 15 with school administrators and local residents to begin forming levy campaign committees and ways to help promote a planned 10-year, 9.25-mill emergency operating levy for day-to-day needs and operations in the district.
Treasurer Linda Molinaro said the levy would generate $2 million per year.
A special meeting will be 5 p.m. Monday at the Administration Building to give final reading on the levy. A work session will follow.
Superintendent Ann Marie Thigpen said the owner of a $100,000 home would pay approximately $20 a month. The levy is needed because of decreased state and federal programs, cost of charter schools and school choice, and no additional operating dollars for 12 years since 2005, she said.
