WARREN -- When a teacher becomes a mentor, a life coach, a guide leading students toward success, then that teacher deserves an A+.
And that precisely is what the Tribune Chronicle, Trumbull County Educational Service Center, Trumbull Retired Teachers Association and Outback Steakhouse want to do -- give deserving teachers the sterling grade through the annual A+ Teacher Awards program.
Through Friday, nominations will be accepted from students, former students, parents and co-workers explaining why their favorite educators deserve to be recognized as an A+ Teacher.
On May 21, the 20 teachers selected will be recognized for their extraordinary work in a story in the Tribune Chronicle. They will be treated later to dinner at Outback Steakhouse.
Each teacher must be a K-12 educator in a public, private or parochial school setting in Trumbull County. Retired, substitute and preschool teachers are not eligible.
Nominations should include the name of the teacher and school, as well as how the teacher has influenced, supported or inspired students. Nominations can be submitted by students, parents or colleagues. Parents can assist children with nominations.
Last year, nearly 1,325 submissions were received.
Sue Shafer, Tribune Chronicle community events coordinator, said each year, the newspaper receives heartwarming letters from students of all ages about teachers from kindergarten through high school, as well as about the significant impact these educators have had on their lives.
"The A+ Teacher program is a way to thank those teachers and let them know they are appreciated," Shafer said.
Teachers nominated for the honor may win only twice during their career. Should a teacher be chosen twice, he or she is elevated to the A+ Teacher Hall of Fame.
