NILES -- Local residents were given the chance to speak with police from area departments at a Coffee with a Cop event March 1 at the city wellness center.
The free event was hosted by the General Federation of Women's Club Ohio Warren Junior Women's League.
Officers from Niles, Girard, Weathersfield and Trumbull County Sheriff's Office attended to answer questions and hear suggestions from attendees.
Niles police Lt. Jim Villecco said he received questions about his job and also about different crimes in the area, including breaking and enterings to a recent shooting in Howland.
Stephanie Furano, event co-chair with Dori Harris of the public issues committee of the WJWL, said this was the league's way of holding a community event to thank police officers and law enforcement for protecting the community.
"We wanted to say 'thank you' and let people sit down with the police and speak with them about any questions or concerns that they may have," Furano said.
Furano said the event was designed to facilitate communication between the police and community.
''We had a lot of interest from people wanting this to be held,'' Furano said.
Residents asked about neighborhood safety, the drug epidemic, Narcan and crime in the area.
