NILES -- Members of the Niles McKinley High School speech team competed March 4 at the Ohio High School Speech League State Tournament at Olmstead Falls High School.
The tournament featured the best competitors across the state.
Michael Bassett, speech coach, said the seven students who competed were: Lennon Rader in Dramatic Interpretation, Jason Bowman in Dramatic Interpretation, Alyssa Bowman in Program Oral Interpretation, Kayla McMillion in Program Oral Interpretation, Damiana Landfried in Humorous Interpretation, Tracie Easterling in Humorous Interpretation, and Rea Gaugler-Beuter in Declamation.
Bassett said the students worked very hard in preparing for the event.
He said Gaugler-Beuter and Landfried finished as quarter finalist, making the top 24; McMillion was a semifinalist, finishing in 12th place; Rader was a finalist, placing fifth.
''We did not have anyone qualify to the national tournament this year, so this was our last tournament of the season," Bassett said. "We have some great kids."
