WHAT: Board of Education organizational meeting Jan. 10
PRESENT: Cheryl Basista, Joshua Garris, Bruce Bacak, Aaron Wallace and Tim Gleason
The board:
l Named Garris as president and Wallace as vice president;
l Approved the following appointments: Basista as representative to the Trumbull Career and Technical Center board and student achievement; Garris as legislative liaison; Bacak as liaison to township trustees; and Wallace to attend Ohio School Board Association conference;
l Approved district employees Kim Rouan and Rose Hinks to handle open records requests for the district;
l Set meetings for 7 p.m. the third Wednesday of month in the high school media center. The next meeting is 7 p.m. Feb. 8.

WHAT: City Council meeting Jan. 18
PRESENT: Robert Marino, Michael Lastic, Stephen Papalas, Ryan McNaughton, Barry Steffey Jr., Linda Marchese, Steven Mientkiewicz, Frank Pezzano and Mayor Thomas Scarnecchia
Council:
l Gave second reading to a resolution that would raise the pay of the water and sewer superintendent $4,000 to $82,000;
l Authorized the police department to purchase four new cruisers. The department's income from the impound lot will pay for one cruiser, the equipment fund will pay for 2.5 of the cruisers and the school district will pay for the other half. A donation will cover the costs of outfitting the last cruiser;
l Authorized the mayor to enter into a one-year, $30,000 contract with the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber for economic development assistance; and
l Placed a six-month moratorium on future cell tower development in order to write zoning policies for the structures.

WHAT: Board of Education meeting Thursday
PRESENT: Susan Longacre, Tony Perrone, Rebecca DePanicis, Mary Ann McMahon and Bob Seifert
The board:
l Approved the 2017-18 school calendar. Next year, school will begin before Labor Day and ending before Memorial Day;
l Contributed $13,331 toward the purchase of a 2017 Ford Explorer for $26,662. The vehicle will be used by the school resource officer. Niles is paying the other half;
l Heard from Carolyn Rinerhart, district supervisor of exceptional children, the Ohio Department of Education did a special education profileto see if children with disabilities are ready for kindergarten. She said the profile also looked at special education student math and reading scores and learning in a general education classroom and in a special education classroom;
l Approved an after-school intervention program for students in kindergarten to fifth grades Feb. 7 to March 9. Staff who assist will be paid $30 per hour;
l Reported wellness and nutrition education programs are being offered at the primary and intermediate schools as part of district's Nutrition Group effort.
