The work of Bruce Stepan Jr. is featured in an exhibition at the Art Outreach Gallery.
The Youngstown artist, who majored in studio art at Youngstown State University and pursued his master's degree at Michigan State University, is influenced by horror and comic book culture as well as such 1990s cartoons as "Ren & Stimpy" and "Beavis & Butthead."
Stepan's panel paintings simultaneously echo and parody the works of historic Flemish artists, while his stylized figures reference modern day alternative comic illustration as well as contemporary figurative painting. Stepan currently is exploring the varying degrees of abstraction inherent in the distortion of cartoon and representational imagery.
"Bruce Stepan Jr.: Remixing Imagination" will be on display through Sunday at the gallery inside Eastwood Mall, 5555 Youngstown Warren Road, Niles. Stepan will do live painting demonstrations Saturdays during the run of the show.
Gallery hours are 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
