Nominees sought for Community Stars
WARREN -- The Tribune Chronicle and Trumbull 100 are seeking nominations for the annual Community Stars award.
The program, now in its 16th year, celebrates volunteers who go above and beyond to make a measurable impact in the lives of others. Nominations will be accepted through Monday. The winners will be honored at a banquet March 21 and will be featured in a special section in the Tribune Chronicle the next day.
Nominations can be made by filling out the form that will run periodically in the Tribune Chronicle and mailing it to Tribune Chronicle, c/o Sue Shafer, 240 Franklin St. SE, Warren, OH 44483. Submissions also can be emailed to Shafer at sshafer@tribtoday.com or by logging on to www.tribtoday.com and clicking on the Submit News button. There is a category for Community Stars.
Police captain named interim Girard chief
GIRARD -- Police Capt. John Norman was named acting police chief for the Girard Police Department, replacing Chief Jeff Palmer, who accepted a position as a major in charge of the criminal and civil divisions at the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office.
Norman, who is a senior captain, served for a few weeks in December as acting chief after Palmer left the department. Palmer served 20 years in Girard, nine as captain before becoming chief in 2009.
Mayor James Melfi said the city's Civil Service Commission will begin the process of testing and selecting a permanent police chief.
Church makes plans for rummage sale
McDONALD -- Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 618 Ohio Ave., will host a rummage sale 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 10 and 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 11.
A bake sale and 50 / 50 raffle will be featured.
There also will be a clothing bag sale, and all other merchandise will be half off Feb. 11.
