Patrol: Memorial Day fatalities lowest in 18 years

Provisional data from the Ohio State Highway Patrol is reporting six traffic fatalities over the four-day Memorial Day Weekend — the lowest number in 18 years. This year’s reporting period began on Friday and continued through Monday. During the reporting period, troopers made 16,490 traffic enforcement contacts, including 355 impaired driving arrests, 66 drug arrests and 2,090 safety belt citations. $10,000 stolen from sober house safes

WARREN — City police are investigating after $10,000 was reported missing from safes over the weekend. According to a Sunday police report, an officer was called to Aris Street NW in response to a theft, and he spoke with two men, one of whom explained that the address is a sober house and that he was a manager there. The manager said the house has safes in the basement for residents staying there, adding that both of them have safes and only have keys to their own. WASHINGTON — About 80 of 247 spellers competing in the Scripps National Spelling Bee were eliminated in the first round Tuesday, including two local champions from the Mahoning Valley. YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Press Club has awarded $16,000 in scholarships, comprised of a $4,000 scholarship to each of four students, all of them enrolled at universities in Ohio and majoring in journalism or a related field.
