WARREN - Edward Stredney's experience as a Niles councilman and safety service director was enough for a narrow victory in the race to become the next Trumbull County auditor.
Incomplete and unofficial results from the Trumbull County Board of Elections show Stredney won 51% to Mike Loychik's 49% in Tuesday's general election.
"It has been a long race and I'm appreciative for tonight," Stredney said.
Stredney said running the countywide campaign was an honor and more daunting than any previous electoral effort in which he has participated.
"Until someone does this, you cannot appreciate all of the differences there are throughout the county," Stredney said.
"We knocked on many more doors," he said. "We attended so many events."
Stredney noted the first thing he will do as the new auditor is to take a heartbeat of where the office is, as well as see how the office will be able to work with the commissioners office.
Loychik, a former state representative, did not return several messages seeking comment.
During the campaign, the Republican candidate emphasized he wanted to ensure accurate property evaluations in the county. He also noted a goal to modernize the office with updated software and technologies.
Stredney will replace one-term auditor Martha Yoder, who began her term working to straighten out incorrect CAUV tax filings done by a prior administration. Yoder then worked closely with the Trumbull County commissioners in keeping track of American Rescue Plan grants the county was assigning for projects.
She was defeated by Loychik in the May primary. Her office was plagued by the transfer of funds belonging to Bazetta Township into a fraudulent account.
