BRISTOL – Township officials are planning to address the 15-foot obelisk at the Sager Pioneer section of the North Bristol Cemetery that officials are afraid will fall over because of its age and condition.
Trustees last month discussed the obelisk with plans to take it down and lay it on the ground. Officials said work would not exceed $1,600 to take it down.
An obelisk is a tapered, four-sided stone monument that is usually monolithic and has a pyramidal top commonly found in many cemeteries.
Mary Ann Raidel with the Bristol Historical Society said the association may be able to help with the costs for the obelisk. She also said the Vienna Historical Society has done extensive work with cemetery marker restoration and may be able to assist Bristol trustees.
Trustees plan to address the matter further at their meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Most recently, the township and historical society hosted a rededication of the Civil War marker at the township center. The marker was installed in October 1867 and has the names of 14 Bristol soldiers who were killed during the war on it.
Trustee Doug Seemann said the township and historical society have been discussing what items to include inside a time capsule for the 250th anniversary of the nation. Plans are to bury the capsule near the historic barbershop and doctor’s office.
In other business, trustees:
* Approved Noel’s Car Toys in Niles at $2,750 for getting wide-angle backup cameras on four township vehicles: a dump truck, fire truck and rescue engines. Seemann said grant money to the township will help cover costs.
* Announced CPR and AED training will be provided at 10 a.m. Nov. 20 by the fire department and includes instruction to township employees and fire department staff with space available for residents at $20 per person.
* Announced the Christmas tree lighting and parade at 6 p.m. Nov. 14 at the township cemetery.
