LIBERTY – A vehicle whose registration showed a suspect with an active warrant managed to elude officers in a recent chase.
According to a police report released Tuesday, an officer was on patrol in the southbound area of Belmont Avenue Oct. 7 when he noticed a black GMC pickup truck traveling in the same direction near the Walmart intersection.
The report states the officer ran a random check through LEADS and learned the vehicle’s registered owner had a warrant through the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office, which dispatchers confirmed to be still active.
The officer traveled back and noticed the vehicle traveling around the back of WesBanco and stopping at the intersection of Belmont and Goldie Road, adding that he saw a tan-skinned male driving the vehicle, which matched the physical descriptors provided on his computer.
The report states the officer activated his lights and began traveling southbound to catch up with the vehicle, which was moving slowly, but ignored the officer’s signals and sirens as he attempted to conduct a traffic stop.
The report states the vehicle took off at about 70 mph at the intersection of Belmont and Trumbull Avenue and the officer continued the pursuit, noting the vehicle was weaving in and out of traffic, crossing into the northbound lane and not stopping at red lights. The officer added that the traffic was moderate and there were no pedestrians around.
A sergeant told all officers to stop the chase as the officer chased the vehicle on Belmont into Youngstown, adding that the vehicle was last seen traveling southbound and dispatchers informed Youngstown police of the vehicle.
