Until Jan. 1, 1994, Newton Falls and Newton Township operated separate fire equipment and the township contracted with the city for manpower. Fire services were combined into the Newton Falls Joint Fire District under the management of a five-member board composed of one member of village council, one township trustee and three residents. The township and village rotate annually on the appointment of the three residents.

The Joint Fire District is an all-hazard fire department that provides fire, rescue, EMS and fire prevention services to the district. The district is made up of 41 part-time and paid-per-call personnel operating out of two stations and answering approximately 2,300 emergency calls annually. The district is currently rated ISO 3/3y.
