WARREN – A community tree planting event took place Saturday morning at Perkins Park and was part of a broader initiative to revitalize Warren's urban canopy.

The event was organized by the Warren City Arbor Commission and Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership. Volunteers assisted in planting and mulching the new trees, as well as mulching the 20 existing trees around the park’s walking track. Also at the event was the unveiling of the new tree identification signs on the trees, with funding for the signs coming from the Healthy Community Partnership. The Warren City Arbor Commission aims to prioritize the planting, maintenance and education of trees as a key part of Warren's sustainability and beautification efforts, according to a news release from TNP.

The tree planting is part of the Mahoning Valley TreeCorps program, an initiative focused on planting 5,500 shade trees in Youngstown and Warren. Trees are planted in tree lawns with resident permission, public parks and open greenspaces. Since 2024, more than 700 trees have been planted in Warren as TNP’s role in the Mahoning Valley TreeCorps.

“Perkins Park has already made tremendous progress, and planting trees is just a piece of this," said Lydia Lynch, Health and Wellness Coordinator for TNP, and adviser for the Arbor Commission. "They improve air quality, provide shade and enhance the beauty of our public spaces."

Twelve shade trees were planted along the walking track at Perkins Park.
