WARREN -- Amy Loudermilt, mother of Billy J. Anderson, 20, who was fatally stabbed at an apartment on South Feederlee Drive SE April 19, told Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Cynthia Westcott on Wednesday her son was "the sweetest, kindest kid.”
"He was respectful, caring, and he was the kind of person who would help anyone who needed it," she said at the sentencing hearing for Nazeer S. Buckley, 30, who pleaded guilty to murder and got the 15-years-to life prison sentence called for in his plea agreement.
"Billy loved coming home to Mom's just to hang out. We would walk together, go hiking sit and talk or simply spend time together. We didn't need a special occasion to make those moments meaningful,” Loudermilt said.
She said she would "give anything to hear his voice and see him walking through my door again. But he isn't coming home, and I have to live with that reality every single day."
Prosecutors said that on the day of the killing, officers found Anderson, of Warren, at the top of the staircase of the apartment suffering from multiple stab wounds. The knife that was used was located and witnesses identified Buckley as the person who stabbed Anderson during an altercation. Anderson was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Family members have said that Anderson lived in the apartment where he suffered the fatal wound, but went there that night to confront a woman Anderson was seeing over her relationship with Buckley.
Buckley, also of Warren, did not offer any comments prior to sentencing.
WARFIELD SENTENCE
Also on Wednesday, Westcott sentenced Daron Warfield Jr., 37, of Duke Street, to 5 1/2 years in prison after being convicted at trial of three counts of felony strangulation and single felony counts of domestic violence and menacing by stalking in a June 3 incident.
Evidence at the trial indicated that Warfield beat and choked his then-live-in girlfriend, who was pregnant.
The victim testified about the beating that took place in front of the couple’s 3-year-old son. Cellphone photos also were introduced, showing deep bruising on her face and neck. Text messages showed Warfield admitting to the assault.
Westcott said there are indications that Warfield is at high risk of re-offending. Warfield got credit for 81 days already served in the Trumbull County jail awaiting trial.
Warfield did not offer any remarks. His attorney said it was because Warfield plans to appeal his convictions and sentencing.
MICHAEL WALKER SENTENCE
Also on court Wednesday was Michael L. Walker, 31, of Summit Avenue in Niles, who pleaded guilty to a bill of information containing 10 counts of pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor, all high-level felonies.
Westcott sentenced him to four to six years in prison, and he is now labeled a Tier 2 sex offender and will have to register his address every 180 days for 25 years after he leaves prison. The sentence was jointly recommended by the prosecution and defense.
Pleading guilty to a bill of information means the defendant has waived his right to have a grand jury determine whether there is probable cause that a crime was committed and the defendant committed it. The charges go directly to common pleas court.
Trumbull County Assistant Prosecutor Gabe Wildman said Walker's activities were investigated by the Niles Police Department after the department received a cyber tip from officers with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force concerning child sex abuse material stemming from Walker's residence.
Wildman said a search warrant was executed at the home, and "thousands of files were found, including 10 that were "isolated" for prosecution. The files depicted children in a state of nudity and engaging in sexual activity.
