Champion, Warren Townships to meet on data centers

By BOB COUPLAND 2 min read

Champion and Warren township officials plan to meet to discuss what needs to be on the books to handle a data center if one were to locate in either township.

Champion Trustee Chairman Doug Emerine said to date, the Champion zoning department has not been approached by anyone about a data center. He said the township zoning board is working on getting guidelines in place and has been reviewing what Hubbard Township and other communities have done.

Emerine said one property that has been discussed is the former Copperweld property off state Route 45 that straddles both townships. He said the 360-acre site has one-third of the land in Champion and two-thirds in Warren Township.

Emerine said of the available properties in Champion, that one would be the one to locate a data center on and the zoning department needs to be prepared.

“Right now we need to get as much information as we can on data centers. I am not sure what Warren Township officials want to do, but we need to get together and discuss this,” Emerine said.

He said if a data center or any other large business were to express interest in locating in Champion, there would be public meetings to keep residents informed.

“No matter what, there will be a data center located somewhere in Trumbull County,” Emerine said.

Warren Township Trustee Ed Anthony said he agrees with Emerine that the Copperweld property would be the one where a data center would possibly locate.

“It is prime property because of the available land and being by the river, which would provide water, but we have not received any inquiries,” Anthony said.

He said the property does have many cleanup issues and there is litigation still on the property.

Anthony said the township’s zoning board has been reviewing what to include in the zoning codes.

Anthony said a joint meeting is being planned for 6 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Champion administration building.

Also, Champion officials approved providing between $6,000 and $7,000 for the road department to do drainage upgrade work this year on Marshall Road.

Emerine said the money will cover the costs for materials and supplies needed for the work.

In another matter, Vanessa Teuscher found a bulletin and a service schedule from Dec. 1, 1985, when the township cemetery chapel was dedicated. She had the two items framed and they will be placed inside the chapel.
