CHAMPION -- Township officials said they plan to see what they can do to address flooding along Young's Run.
Trustee Doug Emerine said the three trustees, other township officials and members of the Trumbull County Soil and Water Conservation District recently walked along Young's Run, which travels north to south.
"We are trying to get some help to get it cleaned up to alleviate all the flooding issues we have had. When it rains, it overflows and there are problems with nearby residential yards flooding," Emerine said.
Emerine said during a recent meeting that Young's Run branches off in two directions. He said they walked from where Northwood Golf Course is located off Champion Avenue south to Kent State University at Trumbull and to Lake Ann, which is on the KSU property.
Trustees also have added three full-time firefighters to the roster. Their salaries are being partially covered by a federal SAFER grant. Fiscal Officer Laurie-Jo Miller said the grant for this year is $120,000, with the three firefighters hired in July at $65,000 each.
Trustees approved increasing 2026 appropriations by $160,000 to cover expenses associated with the addition of the full-time firefighters.
Miller said fire department personnel and contracts will be discussed at 6 p.m. Sept. 15.
Zoning Inspector Gerry Brown said he has been working with Mercy Health, which plans to put in signage off Mahoning Avenue where the former Trumbull Career & Technical Center sign was located, and a sign off Champion Avenue near Research Highway. The signs will let the public know where the new Mercy Health emergency facility will be off Educational Highway.
