NILES -- A former General Electric plant will soon be integrated into the city, as officials took another step toward making it legally active.
City Council at Wednesday's meeting approved the second reading of an ordinance accepting and confirming the dedication of Illumination Point Drive as a public street in the city and declaring it under the city's care, supervision and control.
The ordinance states the street is formerly a plat named Judith Kovach Plat No. 1, which was prepared by FSBP Corp, the property's owner and proprietor.
Mayor Steven Mientkiewicz said Thursday that the property is a former General Electric glass plant property.
The plant closed in 2010, but FSBP acquired the property in 2021, according to reports.
"Vacant since GE closed -- cleaned up and remediated as part of a state brownfield grant," Mientkiewicz said. "I believe there's approximately 10 plats of land within that large parcel, that's platted out for individual development."
The resolution states the plat was approved by the city's planning commission July 8, but it didn't constitute the city accepting the plat as one of its streets.
The resolution adds that Illumination Point Drive has since been graded, constructed and improved in accordance with the city's subdivision regulations and engineering specifications and inspected by the city's engineer, who has recommended the street be accepted as a public street.
There are no plans for a formal ceremony to dedicate the street, Mientkiewicz said.
In other action, council:
• Approved an ordinance authorizing an appropriation budget transfer for the sewer department, and declaring an emergency.
• Approved an ordinance accepting a cemetery grant worth $5,000 and authorizing the appropriation of funds to the cemetery grant account, and declaring an emergency.
• Approved an ordinance authorizing the disposal of a 2017 Ford Explorer by internet auction on govdeals.com and declaring an emergency.
