WARREN -- Jeremy A. Elswick, 53, of Highland Court SW, was indicted Tuesday on charges of aggravated arson, strangulation and misdemeanor domestic violence in an Aug. 7 incident at his home in which he is accused of choking his wife and throwing a flaming towel on the floor.
If Elswick were to be convicted of aggravated arson, he could get about 10 years in prison. He has been held in the Trumbull County jail without bond since the incident.
A city police report states that his wife went to the Warren Police Department at 4:53 a.m. Aug. 7, saying Elswick set their house on fire, he choked her and put a gun to her head.
Officers went to their home and saw that a shed in the back yard was smoking. About the same time, officers saw Elswick walking out of the front door of the home. Officers yelled commands for Elswick to put up his hands, and he was taken into custody.
Once he was secured in a police cruiser, officers went to the shed and removed a towel "that was on fire and put it out." Officers went inside the house and did not find any other people or fires, but officers observed "several burn marks in the carpet," the report states.
It was determined that the shed had not been on fire, but the appearance of smoke had come from a towel thrown on the dirt floor.
Officers recovered a pistol from the center console of the couch in the house and a shotgun from the living room. When officers asked Elswick what happened, he "admitted to lighting the towel on fire and throwing it on the living room floor," the report states. When asked what he was trying to do, he declined to answer.
His wife said Elswick told her "demons were talking to him," and he grabbed her by the neck and choked her to the point she could not breathe. She did not lose consciousness, she said. He took a gun out of the center console of the couch and pointed it at her head.
Then he turned the gun toward himself and walked into another room and got a towel, lit it and threw it on the living room floor, she said. She fled the home and went to the Warren Police Department, the report states.
BURGLARY CHARGES
Also, three people from South State Line Road in Masury were indicted on felony burglary charges for incidents in June of 2025 on Spring Dale Drive NE in Brookfield in which they were accused of using a vacant house without permission.
The defendants are Brayden Crockett, 19, Brittany L. Hume, 35, and Shane T. Link, 36. If convicted, each person could get several years in prison.
Brookfield police were notified June 26, 2025, that there were possible "squatters" in the vacant home. Officers made contact with Crockett, who said he and his family were staying at the home and that Link was doing work on the home.
OTHER INDICTMENTS
A Trumbull County grand jury also indicted about 25 other people Tuesday. They will have arraignments with the judge assigned to their case in the next couple of weeks. They are:
• Brandon D. Bryant, 43, Meadowbrook Avenue SE, possession of cocaine and possession of a fentanyl-related compound.
• Teri-Jo M. Cangemi, 39, Maryland Street NE, possession of cocaine, aggravated possession of drugs and theft.
• Lance C. Cain, 36, Oregon Avenue, Youngstown, having weapons while under disability and improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle.
• Elisha Poole, 19, South Feederle Drive SE, tampering with evidence and improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle.
• Anthony J. Gillespie, 36, DeForest Road SE, failure to comply with order/signal of police officer and aggravated menacing.
• Henry C. Poplin, 53, in care of Trumbull County jail, trespass in a habitation when a person is/likely to be present.
• Dominique D. McCorkle, 38, Dunstan Drive NW, aggravated burglary and assault.
• Aukeem A. Williams, 41, Blakley Circle, receiving stolen property.
• Latroy T. McMillian, 31, Duke Avenue, receiving stolen property.
• Genesis A. Allen, 27, Market Street, Cortland, tampering with evidence, trespass in a habitation when a person is/likely to be present and possession of cocaine.
• Steven Lorraine Jr., 22, Mines Road SE, Howland, possession of cocaine and two counts OVI.
• Floyd L. Prusky, 36, North State Street, Niles, strangulation, abduction and domestic violence.
• Alexander W. Naylor, 22, Woodland Street NE, possession of cocaine and possession of fentanyl-related compound.
• Anton L. Perry, 49, Arthur Drive NW, Warren, possession of cocaine and possession of a fentanyl-related compound.
• Michael D. Bradshaw Jr., 42, North Park Avenue, Warren, four counts having weapons while under disability.
• Randall Humenik, 57, Donora Avenue NE, Warren, possession of cocaine.
• Thomas G. Watts, 57, Cleveland, illegal conveyance of drugs onto grounds of governmental facility and aggravated possession of drugs.
• Wilbert L. Brookover, 29, Newton Drive, Newton Falls, failure to comply with order/signal of police officer and OVI.
• Joseph C. Haynes, 63, Parkman Road NW, possession of cocaine.
• Steven A. Doan, 36, U.S. Route 422, Southington, having weapons while under disability, failure to comply with order/signal of police officer; improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle and OVI.
• Andre E. Perry, 29, Belvedere Ave SE, three counts misuse of credit cards.
• Paul W. Whitt, 48, Niles Road SE, two counts aggravated possession of drugs.
