WARREN -- A man initially thought to be the victim in a June 16 shooting at Parkman Road and Northfield Avenue NW was arraigned Tuesday on two counts of felonious assault and one count of discharging a firearm into a habitation.
Kasey N. Morgan, 21, of Linda Drive NW, was arraigned on two counts of felonious assault and one count of discharging a firearm into a habitation, all second-degree felonies. The charges were filed June 29, according to Warren Municipal Court records. Morgan returns for his next hearing Thursday.
Morgan was booked into the Trumbull County jail Sept. 2 and remains there, according to jail records. If convicted of those charges, Morgan could get more than 20 years in prison.
A Warren police report regarding the shooting states the victim was taken to St. Joseph Warren Hospital for treatment following the 5:23 p.m. incident.
At that time, the Tribune Chronicle reported that when officers arrived at the scene, they were advised of a 21-year old gunshot victim at St. Joe's with a traumatic injury. The victim lives on Linda Drive NW.
Also at that time, Jordan Coleman, 20, of Warren, and a woman, 18, of Niles, were charged with one count each of felonious assault. But those charges were dismissed a day or so later, according to court records.
Detective Abigail Krafcik said Tuesday the reason the charges were dismissed against the man and woman and charges were later filed against Morgan was because of new evidence.
Meanwhile, the initial police report in the shooting listed a 17-year-old boy as being "involved" in the incident. He also was listed as a "suspect."
A report mentioned the boy's name a day or so after the shooting in a Tribune Chronicle article about a fatal, June 17 crash at U.S. Route 422 and the Route 5 bypass in Warren Township. The crash came after Warren police tried to make a traffic stop on the vehicle in which the boy was riding.
The driver, Dominique Dorsey, 37, of Leavittsburg, was recently indicted in the crash on high-level felony charges. An Ohio State Highway Patrol crash report stated that Dorsey was going 106 mph at the time of the crash, and Dorsey was intoxicated. Dorsey and the 17-year-old both suffered serious injuries, but survived. The driver of the other car died at the scene.
When Krafcik was asked whether the juvenile was ever charged in the shooting, she said he was not charged and was "not involved" in the shooting.
The vehicle involved in the crash was a silver, 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe, the same make, model, year and color as one mentioned in the shooting report. The license plate number also was the same.
On July 21, a felony charge of obstructing official business and a felony charge of improper handling firearms in a motor vehicle were filed against Coleman in Warren Municipal Court in relation to the shooting. The charges were bound over to a county grand jury July 28.
