WARREN -- Craig Sims, 19, of Willard Avenue, is in the Trumbull County jail awaiting a preliminary hearing Thursday in Warren Municipal Court for allegedly kicking in the door to his ex-girlfriend's apartment on Beal Street NW on Aug. 25 and pointing a gun at her. He left and was arrested a short time later.
Sims was arraigned last week on aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony. He could get about 10 years in prison if he is convicted of the offense.
A Warren police report states that officers were called to Beal Street NW at 10:40 p.m. for a person with a gun. The caller said a man with a gun kicked in her door and pointed the gun at her and her friend. The caller identified the man as Sims and said he left in a black Jeep toward Jamestown Village.
A Warren officer located a black Jeep on the Summit Street bridge, and dispatchers indicated that it was registered to Craig Sims. The officer made a traffic stop and detained him. Other officers went to the apartment, where they spoke with the two women. Officers saw that the front door had a dent in it and the frame was splintered.
"There were wood splinters all over the inside of the apartment as if it had been kicked in," the report states.
One of the women said she had moved into the apartment three days earlier and dated Sims for three months. She said she had been arguing with Sims all day about him not helping her and her family move her belongings into the apartment. She said Sims called and asked if he could come to get a few articles of his clothing and talk to her. The woman agreed.
She said Sims walked into the apartment, saw large pieces of furniture in the apartment and asked her who helped her move. She said her grandparents did because Sims would not help. He swore at her, and she opened the door and told him to leave, which he did.
She closed the door, but about five seconds later, she saw the door get kicked in, nearly hitting the other woman, who was sitting on the floor near the door. The ex-girlfriend said Sims was on the other side of the door pointing a gun at her. She said she was calling the police, and Sims left again.
Sims told police the woman was lying and he did not have a firearm. He said the woman threatened to throw a brick through his Jeep window. Sims allowed officers to search him and the Jeep, and officers did not find a gun. An officer searched near the apartment building, but did not locate a gun.
