LORDSTOWN -- Village council has approved proceeding with improvement work next year on Salt Springs Road.
Council approved having the village cooperate with the Ohio Department of Transportation for the resurfacing of a section of Salt Springs Road that will include asphalt concrete resurfacing, pavement planing, partial depth pavement repair, curb ramps, sidewalks and pavement markings.
Officials said Ohio Public Works Commission funds of $268,241 will be used to cover project costs, with the village contributing $38,862 of the $307,103 total.
Also, Village Engineer Chris Kogelnik said that work will begin on the booster station off state Route 45 with traffic to be maintained with one lane where work is being done on the booster station.
The village approved an agreement with Rudzik Excavating at $225,400 for the work. Officials said $245,400 in American Rescue Plan funds are being used for the project.
Kogelnik said the booster station replacement is a priority for the village.
The project consists of relocating an existing premanufactured water booster station along Salt Springs Road -- approximately 2,600 feet west of Austintown-Warren Road -- to a new location on the east side of state Route 45 north of the village's corporation limit.
Officials said the old Salt Springs Road site will be decommissioned, with select demolition in accordance with the plans. Another booster station site, on Pritchard-Ohltown Road, is to be decommissioned along with these improvements.
In other business Monday, council:
• Heard from Lordstown Mayor Jackie Woodward, who said when she was at the recent Lordstown Apple Cider Festival, she was approached by members of the sophomore class at the high school who want to do community cleanup projects next spring in the village. She said the students would coordinate the cleanups.
• Approved trick or treat 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31.
• Reported that some work has begun on the Kunkel building off Route 45 to have parts of it taken down.
• Reported that resurfacing work will begin on Lyntz Road and Henn Parkway.
• Heard from Road Supervisor Martin Nelder that an old salt truck was sold on govdeals.com
• Swore in Nicholas Moss as the newest member of the police department, bringing the department to full staff.
• Announced the police and fire departments will host a Safety Forces Day on Oct. 10 at the school property.
