HOWLAND -- A vacant township property could soon be wiped clean, thanks to funding from a state program for which officials signed up the township.
Trustees at Wednesday's meeting approved a resolution declaring a Niles Road structure a public nuisance and authorizing its demolition through the Trumbull County Land Reutilization Corporation, also known as the Trumbull County Land Bank.
The demolition will be done with funding from the Ohio Department of Development's Building Demolition and Site Revitalization program, and the resolution authorizes committing the required 25% local match.
"This is a building, a commercial building, that has a structural crack; it has been deemed unsafe, the entire building," said Zoning Administrator Dan Morgan. "If it is funded, it will give us the opportunity to demolish it."
Morgan said the building has been vacant for the last eight to nine years, noting that the owner was making attempts at upkeep.
"In the recent two years, he just sends the letters, doesn't even accept the letters, and they come back to us," Morgan said. "It's an out-of-towner."
In terms of how much the project will cost, Morgan said after the meeting that one of the entities will need to get quotes before the match amount is determined.
Morgan said the resolution is not a guarantee of funding as it is solely so the township can get on the list for the grant.
JEDD STORMWATER MANAGEMENT
Trustees also approved a stormwater drainage facilities and maintenance agreement between the township and Kimberly-Clark, located on four parcels, pursuant to the Warren-Howland-Warren Joint Economic Development District agreement.
Morgan said it's a standard agreement that happens with any new commercial property that builds, to ensure that the stormwater system is being maintained as it should.
Trustee Matthew Vansuch noted that some of the parcel numbers included areas outside of Howland through the JEDD agreement.
"So Warren Township, which does not have a stormwater management zoning resolution, is reaping the benefit of Howland's?" Vansuch asked, which Morgan confirmed.
